Onn 4K Streaming Box setup

Walmart's own-brand Google TV box. Absurdly cheap and surprisingly capable. Here's how to get the best from it.

Why this device exists

The Onn 4K Streaming Box (and its newer Pro variant) is Walmart's own-brand Google TV device. It runs stock Android TV / Google TV, takes the Play Store, sideloads happily, and costs about a tenth of what the Shield costs. It is genuinely the best value streaming device in 2026.

The catch: build quality reflects the price, official availability is mostly US, and the remote is basic. For the money, you forgive all of that.

First-time setup

  1. 1Plug in HDMI to your TV, then the power cable.
  2. 2Set up Wi-Fi during the Google TV setup wizard. Ethernet is via USB adapter if you want it.
  3. 3Sign in with a Google account. You can use a throwaway account if you prefer - it only needs to authorise the Play Store.
  4. 4During setup, skip the "pick a TV streaming provider" screen. You don't need Google's Live TV integration and it adds clutter.
  5. 5Install your media server apps: Plex, Emby, Jellyfin - all in the Play Store.
  6. 6Install TiviMate or Smarters Pro if you're an IPTV user.

Essential settings tweaks

  1. 1Settings > Display > Match content frame rate: set to Always. This lets the box switch to 24Hz for films, 50Hz for UK TV, 60Hz for normal content. Prevents juddering.
  2. 2Settings > Display > Match content dynamic range: set to Always. Enables HDR passthrough to your TV.
  3. 3Settings > Sound > Pass-through: enable if you have a receiver. Sends raw Dolby Digital / DTS to the receiver to decode.
  4. 4Apps > Disable any pre-installed apps you don't use (they run in the background otherwise).

Tip

The 2023 and 2024 Onn boxes both support HDR10 but not Dolby Vision. The newer Onn Pro (2024+) adds DV. Check the box specs before buying if Dolby Vision matters to you.

Sideloading extras

Because it's stock Android TV, sideloading works. You can install APKs directly for apps not in the Play Store.

  1. 1Settings > System > About > tap "Build" seven times to enable Developer Options.
  2. 2Settings > System > Developer options > enable "USB debugging" and "Install unknown apps".
  3. 3Use "Downloader" app (in the Play Store) or "Send Files to TV" to transfer APKs.
  4. 4For IPTV panel apps your provider gives you, they're almost always direct APK downloads - the Onn handles them fine.

Important

Only sideload apps from sources you trust. APKs can contain anything. Never install one sent to you by a stranger.

Known limitations

  • No official Dolby Vision on older models (HDR10 only)
  • Remote is serviceable but not backlit and has limited buttons
  • Wi-Fi is 802.11ac not 6E - fine for 1080p, can struggle with 4K on a weak signal
  • USB-A port for storage works but is USB 2.0 speeds
  • Some units have reported overheating under sustained load - ensure ventilation
