Nvidia Shield setup

The best streaming device for media servers. Direct play everything, audio passthrough, 4K HDR.

Why the Shield

The Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) is still the gold standard for media server playback in 2026. It direct plays virtually everything: 4K HEVC, HDR10, Dolby Vision (most profiles), TrueHD Atmos audio, and even PGS subtitles without forcing a transcode. No other streaming device matches this combination.

Important

Get the Shield Pro, not the Shield Tube. The Tube has less RAM and consistently struggles with high-bitrate 4K Blu-ray remuxes. The Pro handles them without issue.

Initial setup tips

  1. 1Use Ethernet, not Wi-Fi. The Shield has a Gigabit Ethernet port - use it. 4K remux bitrates can peak above 100 Mbps.
  2. 2Use HDMI 2.0b (or better) cables. Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed rated. Cheap cables cause handshake issues with 4K HDR.
  3. 3Connect to a 4K HDR receiver if you have one, then receiver to TV. This gives you lossless audio passthrough.
  4. 4If connecting directly to a TV, use the TV's eARC HDMI port for the best audio support.

Audio passthrough

The Shield's key advantage is audio passthrough. It can send raw TrueHD/Atmos and DTS-HD MA directly to your receiver for decoding - no transcoding needed. But the setup matters:

  1. 1In Shield settings: Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings > Available formats > set to "Auto" or manually enable the formats your receiver supports.
  2. 2In your Plex/Emby/Jellyfin app: ensure audio is set to passthrough, not decode.
  3. 3If using ARC (not eARC): you're limited to lossy formats. The Shield will need to decode TrueHD locally and send it as PCM - still good quality but not bit-perfect.

Tip

The ideal chain: Shield > HDMI > Atmos receiver > HDMI > 4K HDR TV. This handles everything without compromise.

Dolby Vision

The Shield supports Dolby Vision playback in Plex and other apps. DV Profile 7 (the most common in remuxes) works well. Profile 5 (streaming profile) also works. Make sure your TV supports Dolby Vision and that the HDMI input is set to enhanced mode.

Using the Shield as a Plex/Emby server

The Shield can also run Plex Media Server or Emby Server directly. This turns it into both the server and the client. It works for small libraries but has limitations:

  1. 1Storage: the Shield's internal storage is limited. Attach a USB hard drive or NAS for your media.
  2. 2Transcoding: hardware transcoding capability is limited compared to a proper PC or NAS.
  3. 3Stability: Shield Experience updates have occasionally caused PMS crashes. Keep the Shield updated and consider a dedicated server if your library is large.

AI upscaling

The Shield's AI upscaling analyses lower-resolution content in real time and upscales it to better fit a 4K display. It works well for 1080p content and is worth enabling for non-4K streams. Find it in Settings > Display & Sound > AI-enhanced upscaling.
