Roku setup for media servers
Simple, stable, closed. Here's what you can and can't do on a Roku, and how to get the most out of it.
What Roku is good at
Roku is the "just works" streaming platform. The interface is clean, the remote is simple, and it rarely crashes. The Plex app on Roku is excellent - one of the best on any platform. If your entire setup is Plex and you value reliability over flexibility, Roku is a fine choice.
What Roku isn't good at
Roku's app store is closed and curated. You can only install what Roku approves. This has consequences:
- TiviMate is not available - the developer hasn't built a Roku version and sideloading isn't possible
- Smarters Pro has limited Roku support
- Jellyfin and Emby have community-built apps (unofficial) that are decent but not as polished as Plex
- Stremio does not have a Roku app at all
- No IPTV Xtream Codes apps natively - you'd need to route through Plex Live TV or similar
If IPTV is a big part of your setup, Roku is probably the wrong choice.
Model matters
Roku's range is confusing. The differences matter:
Roku Ultra
The top tier. 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos passthrough, Ethernet port, USB-A port. This is the only Roku worth considering for a media-server setup.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K
The stick form factor. 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision. No Ethernet, Wi-Fi only. Fine for most users if your Wi-Fi is solid.
Roku Express
The budget model. 1080p only on the base Express. No HDR. Don't buy this if you have a 4K TV.
Setup tips
- 1Use Ethernet if you have a Roku Ultra. 4K streaming is much more reliable wired.
- 2Settings > Display type: set to Auto-detect to let content drive the refresh rate.
- 3Settings > Audio: set to "Auto passthrough" if you have a receiver. Otherwise leave on Dolby Digital.
- 4Plex: install Plex from the Channel Store, sign in, done. The app is native and polished.
- 5Emby/Jellyfin: install from the "Install private channel" option using codes the communities publish.
- 6Disable "Bandwidth saver" in Settings > Network if you're on a fast connection - it caps quality unnecessarily.
Tip
If you want IPTV on a Roku-only household, the cleanest option is to run Plex Live TV with a tuner or an IPTV-to-Plex bridge. Not ideal but the best available path.
